InsideMicrosoft Focuses on Windows Mobile 7

win-mobile-7

The InsideMicrosoft blog has some serious coverage of what may be what we’ll be using in our Windows powered mobile devices in the near future. Touch screen (a la iPhone or Microsoft Surface depending on your point of view) will be key, but how about motion gestures like you’d expect while playing the Nintendo Wii?

Windows Mobile 7 will use motion gestures, something the iPhone does not. It will not use an intricate and complicated series of gyroscopes and accelerometers. Instead, it will use the camera on the phone to detect motions and create appropriate actions. You will be able to shake, twist and otherwise manipulate the phone and get things done. The phone will be able to perform actions when placed face down on a surface, and it will know when it is in your pocket or bag.

Sounds pretty cool, but I can just envision a bunch of business people in a lobby shaking and swinging their phones to get stuff done. Interesting, but I’ll need to see it in real-world application to make a final decision.

Is Xbox 360 "Wireless Ready"

xbox-360-wireless-ready

I was just on the Xbox.com website looking for details about the Xbox 360 Quick Charge Kit and I saw the advertisement above.

Did you know the Xbox 360 is wireless ready? It all depends on what you consider wireless ready. When you see the word “wireless” nowadays do you think of wi-fi Internet access? That’s what I think of first, not necessarily the controllers or a headset.

Granted those are wireless accessories and they’re great items being wireless. But when I think of a console being “wireless ready” I’m thinking of Internet access. When I think of wireless ready Internet access I’m thinking Nintendo Wii now.

With the cost of the Xbox 360 wireless receiver sitting at $99 at most retail locations, I just don’t think that many people are really taking advantage of the wireless capabilities of the Xbox. I think they should pursue the printer/ink method, drop the price of the wireless receiver in half or less and expect to sell more Xbox Live memberships and ongoing Xbox Live purchases.

Have you already purchased the wireless receiver? If not, would you purchase one if it were half the price it is now?

Share Your Laptop’s Internet Connection with Your Xbox 360

xbox-wireless-adapter

I’ve had my Xbox 360 now for over a year and I still haven’t purchased the Xbox 360 wireless adapter for it even though I’m paying for my Xbox Live membership. I can tell you it was a breath of fresh air when I hooked up my new Nintendo Wii and the wi-fi just worked right out of the box! Take note on that Microsoft.

Engadget picked up a post from Instructables.com on how to use your connection sharing feature on your laptop to share your wireless connection with your Xbox 360.

Microsoft Gives Away Ferrari 1000 Laptops

Acer Ferrari 1000 LaptopOkay, maybe I’m just an imbecile, but what’s the problem with Microsoft giving away laptops to some bloggers for them to review the new Windows Vista? If you haven’t heard, there’s lots of coverage about it today and the blogosphere seems to be up in arms.

Are we upset that they’re giving them away and everybody didn’t get one? Are we upset that they want them back? Or are we upset that they just didn’t clarify to everyone the specifics about the free laptop?

I’ll tell you what, if the people at Microsoft want to send me a loaded Ferrari 1000 and let me try out Vista and blog about then by all means, send it to me. I’d love to review the operating system, but I’m just a small time blogger that doesn’t have the resources or money to get the preview copy of Vista installed a machine that I could stand to lose if the preview crashed. I’ve come close to installing it on my main desktop at home, but if I lost that computer, I’d have a ton of clients upset that I’m delayed more than I already am at getting some of their work done.

And, if you want me to play with it, blog about it and give it away or send it back. Fine with me. Someone else will get the benefit of having a sweet system they’d probably never be able to afford on their own. If I hate the operating system, then they’ll get an honest review and I’ll have no problem giving the machine back to them. If I love it, then everyone will hear about and you can bet I’d be saving up the money to either buy the full OS and install it when it’s final, or buy a whole new machine so I could get the same experience I just had with the Ferrari laptop.

So, please, someone tell me what the problem is with all of this.

New on Etsy: the Phobic Notebook

Record moments of gut-wrenching horror, in miniature, in this little “fear of E” notebook. On the front cover: a scrolling list of phobias beginning with the letter E, from Ecclesiophobia to Ergophobia. The back is similarly covered, but in shades of D.

This book has been custom painted with oils to produce a beautiful sepia vignette and stained edges on the pages, and decoupaged [ha ha ha ha, “decoupage”] with a vintage sewing pattern. It closes with a fine ribbon and snap arrangement, topped by a typewriter-key letter E.

3″ x 4″, lined paper

EDIT: Holy shit that was fast. I guess people like tiny notebooks, huh?

Barcelona Test - The Summary

Red Bull Fin

Eight teams have finished their weekend of testing in Barcelona. Three days and three different cars on the top. Hamilton (McLaren) on Friday, Vettel (Toro Rosso) on Saturday and Mark Webber (Red Bull) on Sunday.

In absence of Ferrari it was expected that the McLarens will be topping or be very very close to the top. Hamilton topped the sheets on Friday. On Saturday however Toro Rosso’s were both quicker than both McLarens and on Sunday Mark Webber managed to beat the silver cars. Overall the McLarens look good.

Toro Rosso team will not introduce their new car until few races into the 2008 season, so what they test now is an updated version of their 2007 car. Their Saturday impressive run might a bit misleading, as they an the car very light. However they did not do too bad also on Friday and Sunday. This definitelly was an encouraging weekend for the team.

Red Bull came up with a revolutionary design - implementing an ugly fin on the engine cover. And unfortunatelly it seems to be working Mark Webber’s fastest time on Sunday shows. If other teams get the hint, we may see more cars getting ugly.

BMW seem to have overcome the problems they experienced last week and they seem to be around 0.3 off the McLaren pace now. Renault is also clawing back, either the car has seen quite an improvement from last year or Fernando Alonso brought his famous 0.6 second with him. They do not seem to be 1 second behind McLaren any more. It looks pretty even between them and BMW Sauber.

Giancarlo Fisichella impressed o Friday with the 4th fastest time. Force India only tested with 1 car and neither Liuzzi nor Sutil were able to get anywhere near the time Fisi posted on Friday.

Williams did not do much in Barcelona. After Kazuki Nakajima’s crash the team did not continue on Friday. And when they realized the problems with their front wing mounting need more thorough fix, they decided to abandon the Barcelona test completely. A bit of a turn in their fortunes after the excelent form in Valencia. But one of the purposes of the tests is also to find out what does not work.

Rubens Barrichello, Honda RA18, Barcelona
Photo: HondaRacingF1

And this leaves the poor Honda. The car simply is not good enough yet and the team has lots of job ahead to move up from the back of the field to midfield at least. According to Jenson Button the car “lacks the driveability” and the new ECU and the fact that the car is brand new are mentioned as the main reasons. The gap between Honda and the top is 1 and half second at the moment. If I was to bet on who will copy the ugly fin from Red Bull first, Honda would be my candidate.

On Sunday there were 7 teams within 1 second and if ad the impresive run of Fisi in Force India on Friday we can say the field is very tight at the moment. The only team visibly lagging behind right now is Honda. We have no comparison with Ferrari and Toyota this time, these 2 will be testing this week in Bahrain. The lack of news (other than takeover and driver rumours) from Super Aguri is a bit worrying.

Unfortunatelly it will not be the racing that will be making the headlines after the Barcelona test but the racist behaviour of some Spanish fans towards Lewis Hamilton

The 2005 Dirt Bike Show

Yesterday, LB went to the 2005 Dirt Bike Show at Stoneleigh Park in Coventry to give you an in-depth look at what is to be expected there. This is the first time we had been to this particular show, and we were pleasantly surprised with what we found. It was another cold, early start for us to get there before the crowds; we arrived at around 9.30 after a nice relaxing drive and a stop half way for breakfast. The first thing that we noticed was the fact that the showground is in the middle of nowhere, and it was very easy to find. Once there, we found ourselves in front of three large halls full of the latest Off Roaders, ATV’s and MotoX fashion, it’s hard to decide what to look at first. So if you don’t currently ride a dirt bike or ATV, but perhaps are interested in looking at this sport to keep your two-wheeled adrenaline fix going over the winter, or if you’re looking for a new off-roader, or even the latest bling to ‘Pimp up your Ride’, this is definitely the place to go.

Once past the security, we entered the first hall. We were astounded by how colourful and varied all of the stands were. There are so many sexy bikes and shiny bits to get moist over, we could hardly contain ourselves. Jay got busy with his camera, while I got busy, running around like a kid in a sweet shop. The four main stands, Suzuki, Honda, KTM and Kawasaki all had some very nice tricked up machines to try for size. We lingered about the Husqvarna stand for a while and found it really hard to drag ourselves away from the beautiful bikes they had on show. Husqvarna have a couple of really special ones there, well worth having a look. FMF Exhausts display bikes were something else; they also have so many trick bits to temp, enough to make you feel sick. At the Gas Gas stand you be astounded by the range of trials bikes that they have on offer. It'll really make you want to take up trials riding, just for the fun of it. Fox Racing has some really funky clothing designs for next season. The only problem was that you can’t actually buy some of the new items there; you have to order by mail, which was a little disappointing.

There are also quite a few bargains to be had; we saw many great offers for complete fairing sets, graphics kits and clothing, so you should go with a car, and lots of cash (or cards). The other two halls are full of interesting extras; you won’t be going home empty handed. There were so many different types of light-weight wheels, braking components, handle bars, carbon fibre bits, tool & workshop accessories, and replacement fairings to feast your eyes on. Another thing that stood out was the luxurious motor homes with built-in mini workshops in the back and enough space to fit a couple of (full sized) bikes. Five star extravagance for the track maybe?

The show in the live action arena was very engaging. Freestylers Gary Taylor and co were very good, their back flips, suicides and tsunamis were breathtaking to watch, especially as they were on mini dirt bikes. Martin Crosswaite and Dan Clark from the X-Treme Motorcycle Stunt Team were amazing. Their total skill and balance demonstrated on big jumps and hurdles set up in the arena. You have to take your hat off to these boys, it looks so difficult what they do, but they made it look easy. Hungarian stunt man Zoltan Angyal was a complete character, he had the crowd mesmerised with his 360° wheelies, and crazy antics. He was very funny and talented, and even didn’t mind falling off in front of everyone as he went over the handlebars whilst doing a stoppie on his orange 125 two-stroker. It’s worth going to the show just to see these acts alone.

Even if you have never been on an off roader or have just had the urge to try something a little different this winter, you should take the trip up to the Dirt Bike Show. You’ll be delightfully taken aback. This is another great day out and you’ll learn something new about biking whether you want to or not. Check out the gallery below to see full pictures of the show.

The 2008 MCN London Motorcycle Show

As you are probably aware, the MCN London Motorcycle show is being held at the ExCel centre in East London this weekend. Our new roving reporter Mike Dodd went on opening day Thursday to find out what's new in biking for 2008.

With this being the second year of the MCN show being held at the ExCel it boasted more manufacturers than last year. Most of the big guys were there although Triumph were conspicuous by their absence. I found this quite surprising being a British bike manufacturer.

Observing the crowds it seemed that at least two of the stars of the show were on display in the Suzuki arena, these were the GSX-600 and 750’s. As these bikes won't be in the dealers until spring it was good to see them in the metal. Although the colour schemes are similar, the new nose really sets them apart from the older models visually. Boasting three different engine power settings, integral steering damper, three-way adjustable foot pegs and a “more aerodynamic design” I have to say the fully blacked 750 looked very sexy!

Another big crowd puller was the 2008 ZX-10R on the Kawasaki stand. Stood between the new ZX-6R and 250R, all in slime green, they looked quite an impressive line up!

One bike that was rarely without a hungry looking punter ready to jump in its seat was the KTM 1190 RC8. Although this bike looks gorgeous in pictures to see it there at he forefront of the stand in a diamond white was something else. With its high tail, apparent lack of exhaust and clean-cut lines, it was an impressive sight! Alongside were the other all-new 2008 models. The 960 Duke, 690 Supermoto R, 690 SMC and the 690 Enduro.

Another good thing to go and see is the Nick Sanders stand. For you that are not familiar with Nick, he’s the guy that has travelled around the world numerous times on his trusty R1. He unveiled his new R1 all to see for this year’s epic road trip during the afternoon. Although fully stickered up and with a nice paint job it is in fact only a stock bike, you have to take your helmet off to this guy!

What this man does is so impressive, one man alone on a stock bike, circumnavigating the globe. One of his points during a TV interview while he sat astride his machine was that he “wasn’t in competition with The Long Way Round”. After finally getting to speak to him, he showed me that in fact he’s is very down-to-earth, happy to talk to anyone type of guy. It was funny watching him spending some time looking over the bike, as this was the first time he’d seen it too.

Watch this space on londonbikers, as you’ll be able to follow his progress when he sets off in April to complete his 55,000 mile round trip, covering 45 countries, six continents and all in just 100 days! Nicks humble approach and very matter-of-fact presentation was certainly in contrast to what some might call his rivals.

The BMW stand was positively dripping with The Long Way Round/Down syndrome! There was no shortage of wannabe ‘Charlie’s’ and ‘Ewan’s’ drooling over the 650, 800 and 1200GS models.

Harley’s retro Softail Springer Cross Bones looks like it’s straight out of the 1950’s. At a glance the only thing that gives it away is the belt drive but it does have all the trappings of a modern bike. The fat front tyre really finishes off the post-war look.

With a non-show at last years MCN London Show, Ducati made an appearance this year, maybe it was something to do with their successful, year just past! They were proudly displaying – alongside many others - two of their most drooled over stars. These of course were the 1098R, which had pride of place in the centre of their stand and the new Monster 696.

On the Honda stand John McGuiness’s HM Plant bike was kept securely in a glass cage. All in black it had pride of place at the entrance, this was another shiny piece of machinery that rarely had an empty seat all day. With award winning DNA from its predecessor, it certainly looks the part and is promising the “ultimate superbike performance”.

I’d not really heard of Billets brakes before but their stand certainly attracted people with an array of very shiny metalwork. Amongst the superb glittery custom bikes was a race bike, which I recognized. On closer inspection I realized it was Rob Elsmere’s otherwise known to many of you as Reckless.

The last time I saw this bike was at Lydden circuit in Kent during a BEMSEE race travelling at quite some speed upside down! Needless to say it was looking considerably better now! The other sports bike among the customs was a very tricked up Suzuki Hayabusa complete with Nitro. With a 0-100mph of just 5.5 seconds and a top speed of 204.3mph this brain-warping machine needed two lots of Billets six-pot callipers on the front as well as their four-pot system on the back.

Although there was quite a number of accessory stands that did not seem to mean there were heaps of bargains. Certainly things were cheaper but when entry fee and parking is taken into consideration the deals seemed a little weak. Although I do have to say, on the plus side several of them did supply the show with the required glamour of scantily clad models and page-3 girls which I guess made up for it a little! I even managed to get a Gemma Massey to sign a poster of her to Londonbikers.com. This is not something for a public gallery though!

A very interesting stall and one worth visiting was the MCN Surgery; this was manned by students from Wakefield College, most of them were working through a three-year motorcycle mechanics course with a view to working for a race team. Every hour or so they would go through different aspects of bike maintenance, the students going through the action on a race bike while their tutor verbally telling the crowd what was happening and giving advice.

Did you know it’s very important to ensure you have dust caps on your air valves? The reason being if you travel at about 140mph the centrifugal force generated with drive the valves in and release the air form the tyre! A dust cap will prevent this.

At shows you always get people trying to sell random goods that have no direct relation to the subject of the show. One such stand there was called Rescue Tape. They supplied a roll of stretchy plastic tape without adhesive that fuses to itself.

You can wind it round wiring because it’s waterproof and insulates up to 8,000 volts (and not all sticky if you have to cut it off like electrical tape), tape a hole in a radiator hose or exhaust because it can withstand extreme heat, pressure and direct flame. You can even create rubber bands and fan belts with it! This is definitely something I’ll be carrying on my bike with especially on track days. Unsurprisingly their web address is www.rescuetape.com. They kindly gave me a roll to test so I’ll report on how it performs.

Out of all this though, we're left wondering what differentiates this show from all the others, most notably the NEC show up at Birmingham where manufacturers launch their models in the UK first. There seems to be a very common white-wall stall formula the big brands use, with no real innovation or genuine emotion that connections the passion of a rider with the exhibitor. Looking further afield at other shows like the auto shows in LA, where there's a plethora of stalls from smaller outfits with something novel, custom or innovative to show off. In comparison, it feels like the shows we have are for suits and other, more expressionate, stylish or more grass-root shows are for the more passionate riders amongst us. Can our shows be doing more to engage us?

Brock Yates: Does Carlos Ghosn Dream of Electric Sheep?

By Brock Yates
February 4, 2008 - 337 Views

mixim1.jpgThe French haven’t had much influence on the car world for some time. Up until the last decade or so, their automobiles have been goofy little nuts-on-wheels from outer space– especially compared to machines from neighboring Germany, Italy or Japan, not to mention Detroit. But now we’ve got a Frog who’s in play worldwide. You want to talk about an internationalist? Carlos Ghosn was born in Brazil to Lebanese parents. The CEO who rescued both Nissan and Renault speaks six languages fluently and divides his time between Tokyo and Paris. If anybody understands the worldwide car biz, it’s Carlos Ghosn.

Ghosn doesn’t sell his Renaults in the USA. But Nissan is a strong player here and that gives him a major say in what goes on in Detroit— which he claims is in deep shit. During a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, Ghosn said that GM, Ford and Chrysler may very well collapse as the imports seize more and more of their home turf. Ghosn slammed Detroiters, asserting that Motown’s ongoing reliance on pickups, SUVs and large luxury cars will dump them into this ditch.

Ghosn thinks that the little econo-boxes his companies sell elsewhere in the world are the future. He claims that one or all of Detroit’s Big Three will fail as the world switches to tiny machines powered by something other than aged but efficient petroleum-powered internal combustion engines. Without that kind of machine to sell in its home market, someone domestic’s going down.

Of course a lot of the guys in Detroit think he’s nuts. And I’m inclined to agree. Yeah, The Big Three are losing market share. But there are still some very smart guys in the Motor City. You never know what smart people can do when they have their backs up against a wall. And Detroit may be truck heavy is gas-conscious times, but SUVs and trucks still account for around half of the US market.

Still, Ghosn knows how to read a balance sheet. It's not inconceivable that the current downturn will send one of the Big Three into bankruptcy. So what if it does?

No matter who wins the race for president, you can be sure the powers in Washington aren’t going to sit around while our auto industry collapses. The industry is too essential not only to the state of Michigan, but all of the other states. Millions of jobs and billions of dollars are at stake. No one at any level of government is going to let Detroit disappear. A federal bailout is a done deal.

And yet Carlos’ prediction of doom and gloom will please the lefties and environmentalist nutcases who hate cars and the domestic auto industry and don’t mind if Detroit falls down— just as long as they force everyone to drive electric-powered cars.

Trust me: as long as bottom line thinkers like Carlos Ghosn remain in power, the world of conventionally-powered automobiles will be a part of our landscape for a long time. That’s where the money is.

That’s not to say Ghosn isn’t serious about developing electric cars. He’s signed-up with NEC to develop a lithium-ion battery for mass market automobiles. Nissan/Renault has also allied themselves with battery maker A123. And they’ve formed a partnership with Israeli entrepreneur Shai Agassi to test the waters for commercial EVs.

Many people say these li-ion-powered electric cars will be good enough for Americans and their short commutes. That remains to be seen, both in terms of actual practice and consumer acceptance.

But even if Nissan develops an electric car with sufficient range, even if America takes to battery-powered zero-emissions automobiles, it’s doubtful our overwrought power grid could cope. Expand the grid? Easier said than done.

Meanwhile, millions of modern automobiles and trucks are linked to a massive petroleum system that is not only efficient, but sustains our economy. Switching away from this system and developing other sources of power for modern vehicles is a huge concept that only a few people (including Ghosn) are prepared to suggest– never mind assault.

No matter. Mr. Ghosn and many others both inside and outside the car industry are working hard to make their electric dreams come true. Based on Ghosn’s success with two companies, divided half-way around the world, one has to take his efforts seriously.

And yet, for the near future, this is all chatter aimed at shareholders, regulators and the public. Ghosn has to be smart enough to know that the current automobile— four rubber tires, a steel or aluminum body and the aforementioned gas-powered engine– is here to stay. (Yes, you can add batteries, but it’s still gas-powered.)

If Carlos is right and one of The Big Three files for bankruptcy, it won’t be because they didn’t “go green” and make small, electric-powered cars. It will because they didn’t make the reliable, comfortable, stylish, reasonably fuel-efficient, gas-powered cars that Americans prefer.

Motorcycles are my porn...

Sunday, February 03, 2008

Parked next to my car in the Border's parking lot was a bright yellow little Ninja motorcycle, and standing next to it was a guy in a black leather jacket with a helmet dangling from his hand.

He oozed oh it's so pretty and I can't believe it's mine! It's mine it's mine it's mine! and I totally get that; when I was close enough I said "nice bike" because when you have a new bike, you want everyone to notice and praise it and offer it crunchy treats and a gallon of unleaded.

He grinned and thanked me, adding "I just got it. The guy I bought it from met me at L&L and we just sealed the deal."

Okay, Ninja Boy is excited and wants to talk about his new toy. I can play. I told him I had a Suzuki and was having a shitload of fun on it. And he picked a nice day to be out on a bike.

Then I asked, "So...how long have you been riding?"

He looked at his watch.

Ninja Boy passed the basic rider's class at noon today and at 3:30 was getting ready to take his brand new ride home.

"Everyone keeps telling me I need to practice in a parking lot before going out on the street," he said. "That's why I wanted to meet the guy here."

I looked around. It's Sunday, and the parking lot is almost at capacity. Brand new rider on a new-to-him bike in an area where idiots operate SUVs and mini-vans...that had the potential of turning ugly really fast.

"Um," I said, cringing internally, "I think they meant in an empty parking lot."

Ninja Boy looked confused for a moment, and then the light bulb went off over his head.

I wished him a safe ride, and then got I my car and left. I hope he made it home all right...

A New Beginning for Hyundai

By Dale BussHyundai_genesis_unveiling_283

Hyundai executives view their new Genesis sedan –- featured at the recent Detroit auto show -– as a velvet ramrod that will help them shatter the glass ceiling over their brand and move it decisively upscale.

The problem: The upscale ceiling over Hyundai may prove too resistant to the budget brand’s ambitious attempt to smash it and grab a piece of the luxury market.

Hyundai Motor America executives certainly haven’t lacked for expressed confidence in Genesis, their first rear-wheel-drive sedan and one that offers a new V8 engine. They made the car the star of their pricey commercials during Sunday's Super Bowl.

“Genesis provides a potent combination of performance, luxury and value,” said John Krafcik, vice president of product development and strategic planning, at the Detroit show, where the Genesis production made its North American debut after its global launch in Korea in December. “We think it has the opportunity to be an extremely disruptive force in the large sedan and near-luxury segments.”

Staking an Upscale Claim
The main case for Genesis is that it may well, as Hyundai argues, offer many of Hyundai_genesis_v8_engine_210 the benefits of luxury sedans for prices merely starting at $30,000. These start with the V8 engine, called The Tau, that generates about 370 horsepower, and also include features such as XM NavTraffic, Adaptive Front Lighting, Smart Cruise Control, electronic active head restraints and an audio system produced by a brand, Lexicon, whose only other automotive outlet is Rolls-Royce.

“While Genesis will compete for customers with cars like Chrysler 300 and Pontiac G8, our engineering benchmarks were Mercedes E-Class, BMW 5 Series, Infiniti M, and Lexus GS,” Krafcik noted.

Hyundai Vice President of Marketing Joel Ewanick believes Genesis is emerging precisely at a propitious new juncture the brand has been creating just for this moment. “The best part about Genesis is it’s going to take all the truths about Hyundai that we have working for us and put them in one spot, which will also elevate the entire brand,” he told AutoObserver at the Detroit auto show.

Ewanick maintained Hyundai’s recent “Think about it” advertising campaign has been helping elevate perceptions of the overall brand. “It erodes Hyundai_genesis_interior_240_2 negative perceptions and attracts customers who want to be on the cutting edge and be part of the movement of a new brand –- so they can discover it before other people do,” he said.

“Our momentum is one of the strongest in the industry. And right now we’re putting out some of the best cars on the road.”

Hyundai’s steadily rising scores in independent indices of product quality will help. Even the prospect of recession and of a more sober-minded U.S. automotive consumer may play into the hands of Genesis, Ewanick said. “They’ll be adjusting their buying habits and looking for value for the money, not necessarily for the cheapest car,” he said.

Reasons for Skepticism
But there are at least a few substantial reasons some observers doubt Hyundai can pull this off, at least with Genesis –- or anytime soon.

For one thing, the decision to offer and promote a V8 engine –- the Genesis also offers 3.3- and 3.8-liter V6 engines –- may add little to the car’s appeal, given U.S. gasoline prices that seem locked in at around $3 a gallon. And the V8 requires the even more expensive premium gasoline.

One illustration of lesser interest in V8s lately, for example, is only 15 percent of visitors who are configuring potential new vehicles on Edmunds.com are including V8s these days, down from 19 percent two years ago.

Another obstacle is Hyundai already has proven it has difficulty selling larger and expensive models, including its Azera sport-utility vehicle and its Entourage minivan. In November, according to an analysis by Edmunds.com, the Suzuki SX4 and Forenza, among many others, outsold the Azera, despite its offering nearly $2,800 in incentives, according to Edmunds.com’s proprietary Total Cost of Incentives formula.

“That makes it odd that they would want to take it a step further right now and go further upmarket of Azera,” said Jessica Caldwell, an analyst for Edmunds.com.

Hyundai: Trying to Break into the Luxury Class

So far consumer reaction to Genesis itself seems to be largely positive. “People like the styling and the vehicle,” said Art Spinella, president of CNW Marketing, a Bandon, Ore., automotive-research firm that surveyed 900 consumers in three cities recently using Genesis press materials Hyundai produced for the Detroit show. “But they’re not willing to spend that kind of money for a Hyundai.”

The brand-association challenge may rank as Hyundai’s largest, given its aim for Genesis. CNW’s focus groups liked Genesis a lot but expressed lots of resistance to considering a Hyundai as a luxury choice, Spinella said. At best, he said, Hyundai will have to be committed to growing Genesis sales steadily for four or five years before it could be assured of long-term success in positioning it as a luxury vehicle.

“Many luxury brands did well in 2007," added Caldwell. “But the ones that didn’t do as well, such as Acura and Volvo, don’t have as much brand prestige as others do, such as Lexus and Mercedes-Benz. That tells you that luxury buyers keep flocking to the same high-prestige brands. I just don’t think Hyundai is one, because luxury buyers are image buyers.”

Caldwell noted Subaru attempted to go up-market a few years ago with the B-9 Tribeca SUV and a redesigned Legacy/Outback “and lost their identity. It was a poor attempt and they have retreated from that direction and gone back to messaging mainly about all-wheel drive.”

And after trying to climb the upscale mountain with Genesis, Caldwell suggested, Hyundai may end up having to do the same thing.
